„Enemy & Protector“

Duration: around 15-20 mins.

Group size: from small to large

Materials: the story, enough space

Hints for the Facilitator:

  • If you don’t have the right number of participants to divide correctly, the Facilitator may have to play.
  • Make sure that everyone in the group feels comfortable.
  • Make sure that the environment is safe and suitable.

The Facilitator asks all participants to stand around in the room and mentally pick a person in the room who will supposingly be their “enemy”. Then each participant must pick someone who will supposingly be their “protector”. Nobody reveals their choices.

Once everyone makes their choices, the Facilitator yells, “go!” and everyone must try to keep their “protector” between themselves and their “enemy” at all times.  Ideally the group will work out a way to form a line so that everyone has their protector between them and their enemy. However, it is not the goal of the game and only rarely happens.

1. „Save the World”

Duration: around 30 mins.

Group size: from small to large

Materials: sheets, pens, flip chart, Wi-Fi, PC or smart phones, markers etc.

The Facilitator divides the participants into several groups and gives them tasks: each group must choose a theme for the different types of pollution (WATER POLLUTION, AIR POLLUTION, SOIL POLLUTION, FOOD POLLUTION) and describes what causes it, how it gets polluted, why it is harmful to the environment and people, types of pollution (sometimes water pollution can occur through natural causes like volcanos, algae blooms, animal waste, and silt from storms and floods), effects of pollution (environment degradation, human health, global warming, ozone layer depletion, etc.)

Then, the Facilitator gives the word to each group for a brief presentation, after each presentation there are 3 minutes for questions and answers.

2. „By changing nothing, nothing changes”

Duration: around 20-25 mins.

Group size: from small to large

Materials: sheets, pens, flip chart, Wi-Fi, PC, etc.

The Facilitator divides the group into 4 smaller groups (food, air, soil and water pollution). Groups have to discuss each topic with the handouts which will be provided by the Facilitator and to express their opinion and ideas how can be changed.

At the end, each group has to present their topics, for 5 minutes.

At the end of the presentations, feedback is asked by all participants based on the following questions:

  • What do you think we can change in our daily life to change those statistics?
  • Do these stats make you feel good?
  • What do you think is the most important topic from the four mentioned?
  • If you could explain this activity with one word, what will it be?
  • Each of the groups should give an idea of the campaign, logo and motto of this campaign and prepare a „letter” to different stakeholders aiming to raise awareness about the topic.

3. „Run for air, fight for water”

Duration: around 40-60 mins.

Group size: from small to large

Materials: sheets, pens, flip chart, Wi-Fi, PC or smart phones, markers etc.

The Facilitator splits the group into two teams and provides them with the following assignments:

Air team

Must invent and prepare a game involving physical activity which will promote and draw attention оn the preservation and cleanliness of the air on Earth.

Water team

Must invent and prepare a game involving physical activity which will promote and draw attention оn the preservation and cleanliness of the water on Earth.

After the expiration of the deadline, each team presents the work they have done for around 10-15 mins. Each team demonstrates their activity and invites the others to participate as well in its implementation.

Hints for the Facilitator:

  • Make sure that everyone in the group feels comfortable
  • Make sure that everyone is engaged in the whole process – the preparation and the presentation.
  • If it is needed – prolong the activity – so the teams can prepare well – encourage them to make posters, graphs or even the multimedia presentation.
  • Make sure that everyone in the group feels comfortable.
  • Make sure that the environment is safe and suitable.

Evaluation

The Facilitator asks participants to share how we can preserve the environment in 10 actions which can be performed by anybody for everybody, everyday. The participants can create either poster or short video (up to 60 seconds), which their results.

"Agonizing planet"

At the end of the activities, participants will be asked to publish a short message in social networks, preferable in “Start Now” FB group. They can use a picture of environmental disaster, pollution, degraded soil, etc., which aims to raise public awareness on Earth protection with a key message that we do not want in the future to live in an „agonizing planet”. Module’s infographics or photos / short videos of activities created by the group at the previous session, can also be uploaded in social media and websites for dissemination.
